[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,10,true] [atrb=style,width:250px; background-color:#f1f1f1; border:2px solid #3b3b3b,bTable]I'VE BEEN A FOOL AND I'VE BEEN BLIND Maaren stood at the entrance to the Labyrinth, leaning against a tree. His eyes were blank, his expression bleak, and he carried a gnarled staff in the bend of his arm. A light wind fluttered the red tipped ends of his scarf, and some of his golden hair, but it did not seem to matter to the young man. He just stood there thinking and waiting.
The subject of his thoughts was the quest he had taken up, and he was waiting for his companions. One, the young man, Maaren, wanted to be friendly to the girl at the inn. It might help him improve relations, and thus be able to stay for as long as he needed to. Two, he needed to work on his magic. As much as he resented his curse, the abilities of a Hexer were useful in the long run. He would have much preferred the skills of a Medic, but without the use of his hands that dream would never be realized.
There was also the matter of his companions. The Guild told Maaren that he would be looking after one of their valuable "pets" today, which did not make him feel uneasy, but he wasn't sure what to think of it. Beasts were loyal companions to Explorers, but if it needed "looking after," well that just didn't sound good. The other one who agreed to accompany Maaren was a Medic. That was a sour subject for Maaren as it was. Emotionally he might not have been able to feel envy, but he could still resent the explorer for being able to achieve what he could not. The entire expedition, a journey to collect flowers of all things, a simple task, sounded like it was going to have issues based on the party alone. Maaren sighed, and looked towards the Labyrinth entrance. Hopefully, this would be a quick Mission. A man at the Tavern had given him instructions for finding a shortcut to the second floor, so that was no issue at least... The hard part would come from wrestling them from the monsters within the labyrinth. The trip would be almost daunting, if not for the Beast and Hexer she was accompanying. The Beast would have to be the “tank” and main attacker for the party, and considering the groups roles and abilities, wasn’t that bad a setup. There were two less explorers to worry about, and as long as they remained coordinated, the mission should – keyword, should – go off without a hitch.
She came to a stop a few feet away from a heavily covered man with a staff in the crook of his elbow. Unless she was mistaken, he was the Hexer she would be working with. He looked a bit…ill, but she assumed he was in good health. What idiot would run into the labyrinth if they were? A suicidal idiot, maybe. She didn’t see hide or hair of the Beast and its master, however. They shouldn’t be too far behind, though. Or at least she wanted to think so; she’d seen her fair share of lollygaggers during her exploits in the great maze.
Mischa gave the young man a slight tip of her head in greeting, eying him curiously. The way he kept his hands at his side was curious. Something about him seemed a little off, and oddly familiar. Not his appearance, but the way he kept his arms to his side. She’d seen something like that before from a patient at the clinic where her mother worked when she was younger. Something like limb paralysis…She had the absurd notion to through something at him, to see if he could reach up and knock it away. Instead, she gave the young man a slight smile. "Leader of the Mythraegal Expedition, I presume~?" Originally he was to remain caged for a few days while his keeper was out of town and at first he remained patient and calm. Then one day, when he discovered that a thief had visited him while he was asleep, he suddenly went berserk. He started to cause damage to both his cell and himself and his increased aggression was causing the other beasts kept near him to also become restless. The other beast tamers knew they had to do something about him. And so it was the unlucky chosen 'winner' who was bringing up the beast to the labyrinth now. He was an average man with his black hair partially covered by a weathered red cap. He was wearing his everyday work clothes though both him and Narga seemed a bit dirty and disheveled due to the struggle they had getting Narga to comply. Nargacuga wanted to hunt down the thief and had wandered away several times in search of his scent. Unfortunately the human was wise enough to bring his 'leash', a clear glass necklace emitting a very faint white light that could be seen hanging from the mans neck. No doubt the other humans the man was bringing him to would be slightly irritated as they would be arriving a bit late, though he would care little either way. Their reactions might even bring him some measure of satisfaction, though not as much as he was getting watching the human in front of him who continuously turned to take a worried glance over his shoulder so that he might check if the Nargacuga was still following. Narga watched as the man sighed with relief once he spotted the other two waiting near the entrance. He instantly approached them and Narga perked his pointed black ears up to catch his words as he said, “ Ahh! You guys must be the two I am looking for? I'm sorry if we're a bit late.” At this he turned his head back toward the black beast which cause Narga to respond by narrowing his yellow eyes and open his beak ever so slightly in what could only be taken as some form of sinister grin. The man gave off a quiet worried sigh and continued, “ His usual keeper is out of town and I... had a bit of trouble. Nothing to worry about though, I think. You two've probably waited enough so we should get started.” The man reached up and gripped the necklace for a moment as he looked at the other two. To Narga it seemed as if he was considering handing it to them and going home, leaving the two behind with the burden. He would probably do so without hesitation if they offered. After all, the man looked like he had rarely visited the labyrinth... which would explain why he had signed the beast up for something as easy as 'flower picking'. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,10,true] [atrb=style,width:250px; background-color:#f1f1f1; border:2px solid #3b3b3b,bTable]I'VE BEEN A FOOL AND I'VE BEEN BLIND It wasn't long before a woman came into the Labyrinth, a woman with white hair. The Medic, Maaren presumed. He rolled his head against the tree to face her without exerting too much energy. His eyes were still blank and narrowed as he stared at her for a moment, studying her. The woman was older than Maaren, that was for certain, and her long white hair was curious. What made someone like that more qualified than Maaren to be a Medic? Right, the use of hands...
"If you wish to address me as such," he answered Mischa. "More of a guide than anything." Maaren rolled forward on his feet, no longer wishing to be supported by the tree. There was just one more to wait for, and they arrived soon after. Through the entrance came a strange beast, some sort of reptilian bird, being brought along by a man. Maaren didn't know much about beasts, but something about the creature bothered Maaren. Perhaps he'd even feel nervous or frightened if he could, but instead his mind was just registering that the Hexer should be wary of the Beast.
The man along with him, the one who even stated that he was not the Beast’s tamer, on the other hand… Maaren did not like the look of him. He looked too in-experienced. Yes, this was a simple task, flower picking, but one should never underestimate the dangers of the Labyrinth. Even with his little shortcut, Maaren was certain they would still run into monsters. That was just the nature of the Labyrinth.
“A larger group would not be advised for this task, Sir.” Maaren began, addressing the Beast’s stand in tamer. “If it is safe to leave…” Maaren was about to say “the Beast” but he decided to amend this thought. The creature was a team member after all, and an intelligent creature at that. He should be treated as such. “Him in our care, it would be for the best. If that is ill advised, then there is no argument; you must come along. Otherwise, I would prefer to not have any extra baggage.” It was blunt and rather uncaring, but Maaren did not feel like putting up the act today. The Labyrinth just drained his will to pretend to care. Once this situation was figured out, they would depart.
“What is his name, by the way?” Maaren asked the stand in tamer, before he made his decision to stay or leave. It was just curiosity that drove this question, but Maaren remembered a time where even he liked being called by his name rather than “boy” or something else ambiguous. She held up one hand, palm up, in a way of saying "so?" She could already tell he was one of those stoic types; he didn't seem interested in shooting the breeze or being friendly, but then again, neither was Mischa. She usually did quests with only the intention of receiving her share of the reward after they were done, with little, if any interest in "bonding" with the people she was teamed up with. The labyrinth was dangerous...what was the point in getting close to people at a time like that?
The way the man moved seemed to confirm her suspicions - or so she assumed, anyway. He moved away from the tree without using his arms for balance, or moving them at all, she noticed. Her sharp eyes narrowed as she stared curiously at the man. The cruel result of being a Hexer, perhaps~? His affliction wouldn't conflict with his ability to cast his spells, so she marked it off as one less concern. Though, the loss of use in his arms could prove troublesome in another way...
Mischa's quiet thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of careless and uneven footsteps. The final addition to the party had arrived, but it wasn't quite what she was expecting. There was a shabby looking man being dragged around by the Beast - some sort of creature that resembled a cat-like, reptilian dragon. Was that man supposed to be his tamer? It became evident he wasn't the closer he came and began explaining himself. A beast like this being involved in a flower picking mission became more understandable now.
She gestured at the Beast's wrangler, a look of faint disgust creeping across her face. "Yes - the labyrinth is dangerous enough as is without having to babysit newbies. I'd rather not waste the time and energy healing your little 'boo boos' every time you fall and hurt yourself." She stopped to examine the Beast's tail, which looked particularly deadly - a steady, fearsome creature, no doubt. She stepped closer, offering a hand out to the man. "I'm afraid I'll have to be the one to "hold onto" him, though - I don't think our friend here has the upper body strength... Narga was pleased by their words as well. He could respect those that did not use kind words and fake smiles to coddle the weak like Valerian did. They were just that though, words. They meant very little to the beast if the humans were as weak as they looked. Regardless of either beings reaction to their words though, the man still retrieved the necklace hanging from his neck and held it out to the white-haired woman without a moments hesitation. "Y-yes, of course. I'd best leave this to you then. I wouldn't want to be a burden on you guys." There was a brief moment as the 'leash' was exchanging hands where Nargacuga tensed up. He watched the small glowing vial intently as it dangled from the mans hand, held by nothing more than a small leather strap. It seemed that it would be so easy for him to simply snatch the damnable object right there and take off. He knew that it would not fully earn him his freedom though, so he let the moment pass. There would be other better opportunities to escape, he just needed to be patient. No doubt some fool in the labyrinth, or perhaps the labyrinth itself, would provide him with the answers for his escape. "I don' think you need to worry 'bout him though. As long as you have this and don't get him angry he'll hold his own weight no problem", the man continued, seeming to believe that the hexer was referring to the beast when he spoke of 'extra baggage', "Just don' take the collar off from around his neck. Its the only thing keepin' him civil. Take that off and he'll rip you to shreds sure as any monster in there." Neither the man nor Narga seemed to have any reaction to him speaking of the items in front of the beast, except for the beast being slightly irritated that he told them not to remove it. The man knew that the beast already knew about the effects of both the collar and the necklace. The man seemed to scratch the back of his head nervously, unsure of how to answer the hexer's last question without seeming more clueless than he already did. "He doesn't have a name I don't think. You can call him whatever you like, so long as he knows who your talkin' 'bout. We call him Narga though. Short for Nargacuga." At this he gave one final smile and nodded his head as he said, "Well, if that's it the good luck to ya. I'll come by every now n then to see if you've come out." At that the man turned and took off, hoping to get out of earshot before they changed their minds and decided to bring him along. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,10,true] [atrb=style,width:250px; background-color:#f1f1f1; border:2px solid #3b3b3b,bTable]I'VE BEEN A FOOL AND I'VE BEEN BLIND Well at least the man agreed to leave the group be. He really would have been a hassle, especially if he could not control the beast. From what the man suggested, the Beast, Nargacuga, was a feisty one, and if a half-trained tamer couldn't control the Beast there would be issues. Maaren did not doubt the Beast's power though. He looked like a strong creature, and seemed to react in a much more intelligent way than any of the monsters int he Labyrinth. Maybe Maaren was strange for having respect for the creature.
Though at the Healer's brash request to take the Beast's "leash" instead of Maaren... well he couldn't actually take offense to that, but he knew that the Medic was underestimating him. If the leash was an enchanted necklace, then upper body strength would be unnecessary. But, Maaren supposed he would prefer to be unburdened especially since he would need to be leading the two through the shortcut and then deciding the path to take afterwards.
"I... appreciate that." he said to Mischa as she was handed Nargacuga's leash. Once the man finally left, Maaren walked over to Nargacuga and studied the creature with stern eyes. Then, in an awkward sort of flopping motion, he jerked his shoulder in order to raise his hand closer to the Beast. He read something about creatures of any kind seeing an outstretched hand to smell interpreted the action as a sort of greeting gesture from humans. The Hexer certainly didn't want to touch the creature should he have anything against it. At least with the hand, if Maaren couldn't move away in time, he wouldn't be able to feel any pain from a bite.
"I expect you to do good work, Nargacuga." Maaren began, trying to show some sort of kindness towards the Beast. "You have already earned my respect." Even if Nargacuga was a Beast, there was no reason to treat him any differently than any other party member. He was as much a part of this group as anyone else, and he would be the one in the front lines. Good relations was necessary.
With that, Maaren moved back to his tree and gazed into the depths of the Labyrinth. His staff knocked against the tree a few times, and a few leaves and flower petals fell onto the ground below. A hollow sound resonated from the tree trunk as wood hit wood. Yes, this was the tree Maaren had been informed of. The shortcut was just through these bushes. Hopefully there would not be many monsters along the way. It was a shortcut after all. Minimal injuries was preferred. And with that, the Hexer vanished into the bushes and trees, expecting the Medic and Beast to follow soon after and find the clear pathway on the other side of the foliage.
"We should begin then." Maaren said, his voice as hollow as the tree. He was doing a horrible job at trying to hide his lack of caring today. But, these were strangers. All that mattered was keeping them safe and completing the request after all. Friendship was not required afterwards, only mutual respect for their exploration skills. There must have been some powerful magic in the necklace to keep the Beast tame. She pulled it over her head, tensing slightly as the vial brushed against her neck. It was cool to the touch, and swirling with magic juju, no less. She glanced at the Beast as she fingered the shining vial. 'Exchanged one prison for another, eh?' She could sympathize, in a way.
She waved the man's words off with a wave of the hand. Her family had produced a healthy amount of Beast Tamers, after all. She knew a bit about handling them as a result, and she wasn't so foolish as to tamper with the Beast's - Narga's - "leash." She fiddled with the vial again as she watched the Hexer's clumsy movements. He really was a cripple...she hung back out of the Narga's reach, wary in case the creature decided to make a move towards the vial around her neck.
She did crouch in front of him, however, but after the Hexer was out of earshot, directing an abrupt nod of her head towards the Beast. "I know what you're thinking. Don't try anything rash - even big, strong beasties like you need healing every once in a while, and little meatbags like us rely on you. But sometimes, accidents happen..." She gave the vial a little flick. "Hopefully nothing like that happens until after the quest, ne~? "
It was clumsily done, and she wasn't sure if the beast understood or would even comply, but she would feel all the safer for having tried. Did she even intend on setting the Narga free even if he did behave himself? Maybe, maybe not. It wouldn't be difficult to make it look like an accident, in either case. She gestured for the Narga to follow her into the secret path, where the Hexer was waiting.[/style][STYLE=float: left; margin-left: 12px; color: #DFDFDF; background-color: #171717; opacity: 0.8; border-bottom-left-radius: 10px; border-top: 4px solid #0C0C0C; padding: 12px; font-family: arial narrow; font-size: 12px; line-height: 11px; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 1px; width: 109px; height: 320px; overflow: auto; margin-top: 10px;]TAGS: Maaren & Narga
