Due to his paled skin and murky eyes, one might assume him to be sickly, especially after learning that he can hardly use his arms, and seeing how bundled up he usually is. The young man typically wears a dark violet headband around his head, but not over his thick blonde hair. A matching violet scarf is wrapped around his neck and drapes over his shoulders and falls down his back. It is held on by a golden pin, and Maaren likes to bury his face from the nose down in the thick folds of the scarf. On a normal day, the boy wears a long black shirt and khaki colored slacks. It is nothing too spectacular, but at least the headband and scarf offer a pop of color. Due to being a Hexer, Maaren’s arms usually fall limp at his side. His hands are stone cold, and he has trouble bending his fingers. In order to hold his staff, he has to rest it in the crook of his arm, as he can hardly hold it in his hands. When he uses his hexer abilities, he does not move his arms, as most of the spells are disturbing verbal commands. However, his eyes, usually a dull gray or grayed orchid, slowly turn a deep red whenever he uses his powers.
PERSONALITY | When you shift from being a normal human being to being a Hexer, the process is gradual but one can notice the change from bright and cheerful to dull and apathetic. Maaren isn’t completely emotionless, but he certainly feels less than he would like to. It is a constant struggle to keep that last warm piece of his heart from freezing over completely. Because of this, he forces himself to do good things from returning a lost coin pouch to killing the evils in the Labyrinth. While he cannot feel satisfaction from completing these tasks, Maaren knows that he is doing something right. Sometimes though, the right answer is not clear cut, and as he cannot even get a “gut feeling” on what course of action would be better to take, the boy doesn’t always make the “right decision.” He also doesn’t always use the best methods to achieve an end. Black Magic is frowned upon to begin with, but Maaren at least wants to make something good out of this curse. Generally speaking, he has good intentions for the sake of having good intentions. He can’t bring himself to care, but some part of him knows that he should.
Outwardly, Maaren tries to hide the dreadful effects of his chilling curse. He dons a smile and will force a dry laugh or two for the sake of not scaring off companions. Though, he’s usually still a quiet fellow. In this way, he is very logical, knowing full well that he couldn’t survive the Labyrinth without companions. Logic trumps emotions in every situation, as Maaren doesn’t have many emotions left to rely on. He is also very curious for the sake of obtaining new knowledge. When you can’t rely on “gut feelings,” you have to rely on instincts and logic. Learning or knowing as much as he can about a situation or the people around him helps Maaren to make what he considers the proper decision. If he doesn’t know enough about a situation or topic, Maaren can be rather gullible, especially with those who have mastered the art of rhetoric. If they sound knowledgeable and convincing, well then they must be right.
LIKES DISLIKES HISTORY | Maaren’s tale to becoming an adventurer is one of misguidance. He used to live in a small town to a family of hunters and foragers. He and his mother would looks for herbs, berries, and mushrooms in the forest, while Maaren’s father would try to catch birds or sometimes even deer. It was a simplistic lifestyle, but it worked for the wooded area. A time came, however, where a cold winter was about to strike, and Maaren’s father injured himself while hunting. His leg was broken, and he wouldn’t be able to hunt any meat for the upcoming winter. The family would starve. So, in desperation, Maaren went on a quest through the woods, hoping to come across another village, one with a proper doctor perhaps. Instead, Maaren found only trees upon trees, and then eventually a small hut. Living inside was a middle aged woman draped in flowing purple robes and who wore an ornate bell around her waist that hardly made a sound when she walked.
When Maaren asked if the woman could offer any help, she happily agreed and provided him with a small vial of medicine, saying that it should cure his father’s injury. However, in exchange, Maaren was to visit every once in a while and help the woman with a few chores as she was growing in age and could use an extra arm or two. Gullible young Maaren agreed and ran back to the village with the potion, which did in fact cure his father’s broken leg overnight. Maaren believed the woman to be a healer, and was curious to know her healing arts. He wanted to help the people of the village, as such a small town had no doctor or healer, so he happily went back to visit the woman.
At first he did basic chores: gathering herbs from the woods, something he was already good at, sweeping the floors, reaching for bottles on high shelves. Maaren learned a thing or two about properly applying medicines, and bandaging wounds, or what sorts of berries were poisonous and which could numb pain. And, after a few years of this apprenticeship, the woman presented him with a gift to show her thanks, as he had paid off his debt to her long ago. It was a bell in the form of a pin, golden in color and made a very soft sound when moved around. She told Maaren that bells like these where what people in her profession used to draw their power, so of course Maaren pinned the bell on to his scarf in an instant. It was in that action that his fate was sealed. The pin quickly filled his mind with the knowledge of the black arts, and gave his body the power to use such magics. In exchange, the bell sapped away the strength in his arms and slowly chilled his body and soul. Angry with the woman, who he now understood to be a witch, specifically the Witch of the Wispwood that the town always warned young children about, and with himself for being so gullible and trusting, Maaren ran back home. He gathered up a few things (with much difficulty), and then left without a word for fear of scaring his family with his newfound nature. Using his knowledge as a forager, and his new skills as a Hexer, Maaren hiked through the forest in order to find a new home for himself. He eventually came across Mythraegal, and was drawn in by the majestic city and the promise of employment for someone of his talents.
