He simply offered a shrug in response, "Perhaps calling it a footrace was a bit disingenuous of me. You are free to fly, if you wish." Nanashi glanced around for a bit before finding the ideal spot and pointed off to the left at a tall, three story building a few buildings over, "It could be to that rooftop, unless you think that I am trying to trick you somehow." He smirked and pointed a thumb towards his back, "Perhaps I've managed to hide a pair of my own wings with a simple Illusion spell. Who can say?"

She snorted, rolling her eyes. "Me, fly? I wish. My kind lost the ability to fly generations ago. Our wings are little more than pretty decorations, now, too weak to even use to glide. They're great for decoration, and for keeping warm at night, but little else." She fluttered her wings for emphasis, recieving venomous looks from several passerby because of it. "Too much mixing with humans, or so they say."

He gave her a disappointed look. It would prove very difficult to talk her into making the wager if she didn't feel as though she had something to one up him with. Still, it was always good to obtain information, "Humans seem to have ruined your life in more ways than one, eh?" He considered something for a moment before shrugging, "On the other hand, if the Tengu interbred with Humans to such an extent, then it seems a bit disingenuous to say that all Humans are against them. Perhaps you're just looking in the wrong places?"

"Humans didn't used to be so against us, but my ancestor changed that. He had fallen for a human girl, and when she rejected him, he went insane with rage and killed her. Then, in a blood rage, he began killing every human he came across, until fatigue brought him back to his senses." She said it cooly, matter-of-fact, as if it didn't matter to her, but her eyes betrayed otherwise. The tale disturbed her deeply. "The girl he'd fallen for was the witch's apprentice."

Nanashi hesitated for a moment, considering this before shrugging, "It seems a bit unreasonable to hold the current generation accountable for the sins of the prior." He glanced over at the woman again, noting her expression before smirking slightly, "Still...it's romantic, isn't it?" He fully expected her to disagree, although he wasn't intentionally being insensitive. Killing the object of one's affections should they reject them was something that was perfectly reasonable in the Ninja's eyes. But then, he'd always been taught that might makes right, so if the former is able to overcome the latter in battle...then of course, their course of action was just.

She cocked her head to the side slightly, thinking about it. "I guess, in a way, it is kind of romantic." She looked away from him, biting her lip. "I never really thought about it that way before, to tell the truth. I'd always thought, if he truly loved her, he would have cared enough about her feelings to let her go. But maybe he thought that by killing her, he could keep her forever in his memory, or something. I don't know. But whatever his reason was, that didn't give him an excuse to kill all those other people."

He sighed and shrugged again. Yet another person who didn't understand, he thought. Nanashi stared straight ahead for a moment before glancing back at the woman, "What's the difference if he'd killed zero people, ten people, or a hundred people? You're assigning value to something that has none." He briefly recalled something that his father always told him- 'Life, Laws, and Liberty. All these things are entirely arbitrary to anyone, but especially a Ninja. You do what you need in order to finish the mission. There is nothing that you can't accomplish with any amount of resources- it's merely a matter of how brutal you're willing to be and how much you're willing to commit to the cause.'
The memory brought a small smile back to his lips. His father was right of course, he always was. He'd never had the pleasure of meeting someone else that held similar views, however. The Ninja stopped walking and threw his head back, laughing heartily for no apparent reason. He stopped just as soon as he'd started a few moments later and frowned slightly after looking back at the Tengu, "Wouldn't you rather be feared and respected, as opposed to being feared and spat upon?"

"I'd rather not be feared at all. I just want people to judge me not by what I am, but by the quality of my spirit and my music. Even as a fledgling, I was often alone and lonely, because people thought me to be an inhuman monster." She looked up at him, unshed tears making her eyes shimmer. "Is it so wrong, to wish for acceptance, even from just a few people? To long for someone to talk to?" She shook her head, fighting back her tears with effort. "And all life has value. You might not see it, the void that is left when someone dies." She worked a loose feather from her wing and showed it to him. "If you look closely at a feather, you can see that it is made of many tiny hairs that interlock to catch the air. If one of those hairs were to break away...." She nipped a single hairlike structure from the feather with her claws and held the feather up again. "A gap is left that cannot be filled. Life is the same way. People's lives are interconnected, and when someone dies, a void is left that nothing can fill."

The Ninja closed his eyes, sighed, and wagged his finger at the Tengu, "You're trying to choose a third option, but there is none. Not for you, anyway." He hesitated for a bit before reopening his eyes and pulling the feather out of her grasp, quickly plucking away at the feather's vane until only the rachis remained. He twisted it in his hand a few times, making sure that the woman saw it, "...and now there is no hole to be filled. The only lesson to be learned here is that anything worth doing is also worth following through to the end."
He tossed the stem over his shoulder and shrugged yet again, "But, if you're that desperate for companionship..." The Shogun and her retainer immediately came to mind. They were too 'righteous' to be racist...at least, that's what he assumed. "...then I probably know a couple that I can pawn you off on."
